Internet Copyrights 101Since there was an app recently on Facebook which resulted in numerous copyright infringements and legal issues, I figured now would be a good time to refresh everyone on basic internet copyright rules. These rules are by no means complete, official, or set in stone, and there are always exceptions.
Follow the TOS
This should be self explanatory, but please follow the Terms of Service agreements you signed for whatever website you're currently on. Not all websites have the same rules and restrictions in their TOS and you should treat each site individually and not expect that since you got away with something on one site means you'll get away with it on another. Most websites do not allow uploading of content that is not your own.
Ask permission first.
A lot of copyright infringement happens because people don't bother to take the time to ask the original creators if it's alright to repost. It usually doesn't take much effort to send an e-mail or note asking for pe

5 Year Plan*Because I'll be teaching in about a week at SCAD, I've been thinking a lot about what to tell the students.  And I wrote it out so that I could solidify it in my head.  This stuff is for younger artists mostly, so feel free to skip.
When I spend time with another comic artist, sometimes I'll ask, "What's your 5 year plan?"  In other words, what steps is he taking in order to gain control over his career in order to move up the ladder?   Usually I don't get much of an answer.
The reason I think many comic artists aren't forward-thinking has to do with the way our industry is set up.  Whether by conscious design or through the neglect of its participants, younger freelancers get into a habit of complacency while hoping for a chance to suckle from the teet of a major publisher.  Waiting around for a career doesn't promote the idea of freelancers taking active control of their OWN careers.
If I had to sum up the 5 Year Plan

Tip of the Day: ComparingDon't compare your life to others. See what others are doing but the best person to compare yourself to is you.
If I always compared myself to others and wanted to constantly compete or beat others, I wouldn't want to share what I know.
Everyone is on their own journey but together we can get further and faster.

Hands and feet are pretty hard to draw. Lots of artists struggle with them! Even when other things come naturally, hands and feet can still be quite a problem. The best way to get better at drawing hands and feet is to study them!
The Challenge: Sketch or draw 50 feet AND 50 hands from reference photos or life.

Artist Intent vs Fan CriticismsThis has been a subject I've been interested in for years, and one which I personally struggle with on a near constant basis: Artist's intent versus fan criticisms. Before we begin I just want to make this clear that this journal is NOT about "ignoring criticisms" or any sort of endorsement of such an action. I'm gonna be accused of it, of course, but I just wanted to get that out of the way right now.

As I've been observing fan interactions over the years I've noticed a severe increase in a sense of entitlement: IE: that if you love something enough you have a "right" to force the creators to change their content to suit your personal preferences. We saw this play out to the extremes this past summer with the Mass Effect 3 ending debacle, and we see it play out to a much lesser extent here on DA quite a bit.

F.A.N.: Free Artists Network: Diverse Art Education for Creative Students

The Free Artists Network (FAN) is designed to modernize the field of art education, making art lessons more relevant to industry-standard skills and making content easier to access for a broader range of students worldwide. FAN aims to establish an international database of art lessons in various media modalities. These lessons will be contributed by other art educators, industry professionals, and software developers and will offer creative students industry-relevant lessons that meet their own diverse artistic interests, ability levels, and/or special needs. Teachers can upload their own multi-media art lessons to this database to share them with art students and other art educators worldwide.

I think the project is interesting, but I can see some problems coming up already. The design of the website, as shown in your journal isn't functional.

I think for this project to work, you'd need a professional web design agency (I think this project is way too big for a freelancer) to sort out what's important and what's not on this site and to give it a level of professionalism. This might cost a lot of money and needs to be

What worries me most is that there seems to be plans to include graphic design into the workshops. Personally, I wouldn't take any design lesson from a site that looks like that.

Yes, we have an experienced web developer who will be working with us.

"The website" will not be creating graphic design lessons. It just provides a database of lessons contributed by other graphic designers and art educators.

Thank you for your question. In short, the FAN project's aim is to create a network of arts-based lessons for creative students worldwide. Professional artists and experienced teachers will be contributing design, fine art, music, film, and creative writing lessons to the database. Students can find art lessons based on their unique artistic interests and ability levels.
